The new Affton Firehouse is a two story 15,00 s.f. superstation designed to house three firefighting apparatus and one EMS vehicle. It will provide living and sleeping quarters for 3 shifts of 12 firefighters each. In addition the building will serve as the districts headquarters and provides complete administrative facilities for the district along with training facilities for 100 people. The facility is also designed for community use of the meeting rooms. The design accomplishes this use by allowing separation of public spaces from firefighters living quarters. Since the new facility will be located in a dense urban area adjacent to existing commercial and retail facilities the building has been designed to create civic presence in the tradition of former fire stations. The firehouse is intended to be the focus of its neighborhood and create a welcome atmosphere for the surrounding residents.
